“You’ll never know how someone feels unless you are in their shoes.” Atticus Finch said that to Scout, and that stuck with her forever. She would go on to remember this every time she did something. That would help her grow, or help her coming of age experience with Jem in chapter 12. Also in that chapter various elements of literacy are shown. Some of those are conflict and foreshadowing. These two elements develop Scouts coming of age.
The first way that conflict shows up in the passage is when Calpurnia is talking to scout. Calpurnia says “He’s gonna want to be off to himself a lot now, doin’ whatever boys do.”(p.154). What this tells us about the conflict that is arising between Jem and Scout is that he will no longer want to be with Scout and would rather prefer to be alone in the world that lies for him. A simple but very important point that this paragraph makes about Scout, is that now she will now have to not only take care of herself but learn to adapt being alone. First the way that foreshadowing is show in page 115 is when Scout is flustered her is when she heard Calpurnia say “Mister Jem.” The reason that this perplexed Scout is because Calpurnia had never referred to Jem as “ Mister” in the past. This was a tremendous moment for Scouts coming of age because this confirmed that Jem was now in more authority than her. So now scout has to grown up, if she ever wished to get respect too.
