The days of humiliation, of second class citizens and of inequality are over and gone forever. Unfortunately that was not the case in Charlotte's time. During the 1800’s many forms of inequalities existed. The division of classes among the people on the Seahawk was evident. The negative feelings towards Zachariah totally based on his skin color is an example of racial attitude. The multiple examples of unequal treatment given to Charlotte are evidence of bias. The division of classes was commonplace among the people of the Seahawk. In the beginning of the book, Mr.Grummage, was escorting Charlotte to the ship, he paid a workmen to haul Charlotte’s trunk for him instead of doing it himself. By the same token, Captain Jaggery sees the sailors as lower class individuals as shown in the following quote,”And a captain has not the easiest of jobs considering the nature of the crew he must command”(Avi 44).
