In fashion, Seapunk is a distinguished subculture with its own style, colors and designs. It has its own aesthetic and music genre. Influenced by the 1990s epoch, with regard to the internet imagery and beach scenes, the craze started in 2011, as a trend and meme on the website ‘Tumblr’ which was then later described as a micro trend in fashion and music. The label ‘Seapunk’ was invented by DJ ‘lilinternet’.

The iconography of Seapunk includes; clip art of dolphins jumping over pyramids, psychedelic orbs flying over computer generated waves, ship wrecks, anchors, coral or sea green colored wigs. Seapunk followers are all about bright colors like blues, greens, teals, cyan and turquoise.

Quite a few celebrities have been seen yielding towards Seapunk like; Lady Gaga showed up at CFDA Awards on July 5 2011 with turquoise hair.

Several Designers have launched their own Seapunk inspired collections.

On May 15 2012, Karl Lagerfeld hosted his Versailles show, where he showed his Resort 2013 collection. The collection was Seapunk inspired and featured marine-inspired pieces in turquoise and aquamarine.
