Leading up to the 1800’s, in period four, the Religious Great Awakening came about in 1730-1740 and ws a movement characterized by emotional preaching. Uniting the thirteen colonies in the first cultural movement, this awakening was also associated with the democratization of religion. Separation of church and state is a jurisprudential concept that defines political distance between religion and the government. However, the Second Great Awakening and the election of 1800 were in more ways than one, more impactful. Therefore, religion was a leading factor in molding politics during this time period.

Religion grew to be a more personal experience, so over time colonists began to resent state controlled churches. Colonists didn’t want to have to pay for something that wasn’t benefitting them. Separation of church and state became a more and more inviting policy. The government son backed off of the churches and separated themselves from religion. They were no longer forcing rules and the separation of church and state finally became a reality.

America was based off of religion but has made a tremendous change. If American politics were based off Christian beliefs some things that go against said beliefs such as gay marriage, divorce and lying to the people of the country about what you are going to do to get put into office would not exist.
