Sectionalism in the early 1800s concerned such issues as slavery, in which those in the North began fighting slavery more strongly and the South and West fought in favor of slavery, as it was the backbone of the Southern economy.
The Bank of the United States also was divisive to the Union because the Northeast benefited from the bank, but as a result of more stringent credit guidelines, the Western economy suffered. The South remained relatively disinterested in the matter.
Thirdly, the issue of tariffs greatly promoted sectionalism with the North being supportive of a protective tariff and the South in opposition to it. The West was divided on the tariff issue with the Northwest following the North and the Southwest following the South in
