Sectionalism was fueled by the Louisiana Purchase and the Mexican Cession. Both of these things added land to The United States. The Louisiana Purchase added fifteen modern day states between the Mississippi River, and the Appalachian Mountains. The Mexican Cession added Texas, California, and New Mexico. Since both of these event added land it also took away the equal amount of slave states and free states, so the states had to choose. Slavery was one of the main keys for sectionalism. Since the Louisiana Purchase added land the countries had to choose if they wanted to be a slave state, or a slavery free state.
