Case A: Seenesha is a 15-year-old girl who believes that she is the reason her father left her for another woman, who is white. Her mother is black and her father is white. Since her father left, Seneesha has become depressed, lost weight, sleeps more, and has withdrawn from most of her white friends. She may have also developed self-esteem issues because she stated that maybe if she were prettier or smarter, he father may not have left. A strategy I would use to help Seneesha would be Behavioral Activation Therapy (BAT). BAT may help Seneesha in many ways because BAT helps the increase of activity on a daily basis, it helps motivate people with depression, where it has been evident in Seneesha due to her withdrawnness. Although he has a successful business and is financially stable, Brian feels that he has no need to change, other than spending more time with his children. Overall, Brian may have dysfunctional cognitions within his behavior. The best treatment I would use for the benefit of Brian and his family would be problem-solving therapy in CBT. Within problem-solving therapy, Brian would benefit from PST because it provides a positive intervention that will help him develop problem-solving skills to address his current relationship conflict and other issues that happens in his daily life, which in this case: drugs and alcohol. After hearing an incident of her colleague being found guilty of sexual abuse, Carmen sought treatment because of her traumatic experience. She may by experiencing dysfunctional cognitions. Carmen may also have developed distorted/unhelpful views and may have issues on habitual responses such as fear and anxiety. The treatment strategies that I would use that I feel would be beneficial for Carmen would be eye movement desensitization & reprocessing, exposure, and problem-solving therapy. However, exposure seems like the best fit for treatment because exposure allows Carmen to come into contact of her issues and learn to adapt to them.
