Although there is more than one theme in the film The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, the most prevalent one is Self-Discovery. From the beginning of the movie we can see that Walter lives a dull, boring life that has no excitement. From his apartment to his wardrobe everything is made up of dull colours. There is also no decorations in his apartment other than a single picture. This all represents his lack of a personality. We then see that Walter has an eHarmony account but has not received any winks. He then sends a wink to a co-worker but is unable to as his computer shows an error message. This then setups the scene where Walter asks customer support for help. In this scene it is pointed out that walter hasn’t done anything noteworthy in his life. This shows Walters life as boring. To find him Walter would jump on a helicopter with a drunken pilot and fly out to sea to deliver a package. Walter was totally unwilling to do this until he zoned out once again and heard Cheryl sing Space Odyssey a song about being brave and attempting to face new difficulties in life. This then gives Walter the courage to jump on the helicopter and a characteristic that would stick with him throughout the whole movie. This characteristic can then seen moments later when Walter jumps out the helicopter and attempts to land in the metal boat. Walter then takes the boat to Iceland where he finds a bike that helps him to get near the volcano that Sean is photographing. He crashes near a town so he goes the rest of the way on foot. This sets up the part where he trades in his favourite toy as a child for a long board that he uses to get to the volcano. Despite the warning to stay away from the volcano from a hotel owner Walter spots Shaun and continues to the volcano. This brings his second characteristic of being brave. Walter is then saved by the man he ignored and dropped of at a Papa
