In mid nineteenth century America men had absolute power over women in a marriage. In the Seneca Falls Declaration of Sentiments it likens a woman’s role in marriage to slavery, “… he becoming, to all intents and purposes, her master - the law giving him power to deprive her of her liberty, and to administer chastisement.” Though not quite as drastic as slavery itself the injustice felt by women at that time was intense. Later it again mentions the imbalance of power in a marriage, “…the law, in all cases, going upon a false supposition of the supremacy of man, giving all power into his hands.” In all it shows that in the eyes of the law men had all of the power in the marriage and that women were told to just be obedient.
