In Sergei Dovlatov's novel, he explains and reminisces on how he came to own the belongings in his suitcase. Some of the stories he talks about are humorous while others are serious and sad. Mr. Dovlatov was a busy man throughout his life. He had many jobs. most of them boring. He married and had a daughter. The lifestyle he lived at times seemed really boring and at other times it showed that he really knew how to have fun. The object I plan to talk about is the poplin shirt.
What personal. social. and cultural meaning(s) did the object possess?
The poplin shirt was one of the most serious pieces of the story. He talked about meeting his wife. Lena. and how their marriage had lasted while their friends' marriages had ended. They were opposites Dovlatov kept saying. that’s why. Then came their child and they both were a bit panicked at the beginning. but all was okay. Dovlatov said, "Their daughter had made their bond stronger." He also informs us that he and his wife never gave gifts to each other; they both seemed okay with this.

One way it does so is by not having a reason to even wear it in the first place. The second reason and most important reason is that it symbolizes his wife and daughter leaving. Thinking about all the Jews leaving and what they left behind and who they left behind really puts a damper on this chapter. The film Refusenik showed families wanting to leave. I don’t ever remember it showing families splitting up. Of course, they split when they were unable to leave and the Soviet Union banned and imprisoned people from leaving. The families however fought. marched. campaigned and did everything in their power to lift the ban. In due time, the ban was lifted and the wall fell and Jews and many other nationalities were able to
