Introduction to the Sermon on the Mount
(Matthew 5: 1-13)

The trait that can be identified in Jesus’ character throughout this passage is wisdom. A contemporary person who demonstrates this is 87 year old billionaire Warren Buffett. Known as one of the most successful investors of all time, he shows wisdom in his financial choices and partnerships through his experience. Additionally, Buffett also shows Christ-like actions by often donating his profits to the Gates Foundation and other family charities. He relates to Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount because of his knowledge and ability to make good decisions.

Guidance is a characteristic that aligns with Jesus’ king persona in Matthew 1. Barack Obama reflects guidance in his life through the way he led the United States of America. Some of his character traits include respect, determination and intelligence. He does this by choosing what is best for the country, fighting for equality and simply using phrases in his speeches like ‘we’ and ‘us’, reflecting his respect and care for his followers. Obama’s qualities and leadership material resemble the way Jesus reigned God’s kingdom and treated his people.

Mother Teresa is a contemporary person who reflected this through her charity work. She was fully dedicated to improving the lives of the poor and sick. She did this by establishing homes for the dying, running schools for the uneducated and working with outcasts. She quotes “We want to create hope for the person ... we must give hope, always hope” (AZ quotes, ND). Mother Teresa provided hope for people in a world that was struggling immensely due to poverty and created a legacy that continues to spread today.
