For my service learning project, I took the opportunity to volunteer with Glen Ellyn Children’s Resource Center (GECRC) at Churchill Elementary school in Glen Ellyn. GECRC is a local non-profit organization that helps students move successfully through grades K-12 and into adulthood. The Resource Center program first began in 2002, and from that point on citizens came together to help form the non-profit. The group’s goal is to attract more volunteers at Churchill so that every student gets an equal opportunity to learn. The school’s program is to offer multiple opportunities to assist children academically and help them be successful in their lives. GECRC organizes volunteer tutors to provide after school and summer support services for children from low-income families. Monday through Thursday, volunteers meet students in GECRC to work one-on-one or in small groups, helping them with homework and building other academic skills, especially reading. Those young students have little support at home because their parents are busy working multiple jobs to provide for them, or because they are not fluent in …show more content…
After hearing and reading about GECRC, I decided to get in touch with the volunteer coordinator, Monica Lightner. I scheduled an orientation time where I learned everything I needed to know about their program. The orientation experience was very professional, informative and welcoming. I was surprised and impressed by the fact that they don’t just simply allow anyone to volunteer. I had to get a background checking and provide some of my school transcripts. That showed me how they truly care about their student’s wellbeing. They also explained to me exactly what I was supposed to do in details. I was pleased to find out that instead of just helping the kids with their homework, we would also be playing with them, and allowing them to do different
