This semester I have experienced the roles of a set assistant in Hotel Baltimore and as a stage manager for Production One. The role of a set assistant was a brand new experience for me and provided me with many new skills. The role of a stage manager, I felt, was more a converging of the year-long stage management classes put into practical experience.
My role as a set assistant was primarily carried out with the building of the set in the QUT workshop. In this however, I found that I had to take on a lot of responsibility as we worked often with power tools to cut wood and metal. This was understandable due to the fact that they had not had the same amount of training that I had had and I accepted that. My sound operator was quite competent and revised how to do her job in her spare time. We did have to sort out who would source the sounds for the show in the absence of a sound designer and came to the conclusion that she would source them. The only thing that I really helped her with was the construction and maintenance of the qlab file. I find it much more beneficial to teach those who are going to be on my show, providing I have the time, and making sure they know how to use things, progressing their own skills than to leave them in a situation where they have to learn things by themselves. My ASM was extremely competent which I was grateful for and I only had to call her up on small issues like footers and document formats. My lighting operator had very little knowledge on what he was doing and occasionally brought frustration to the lighting realiser due to this. Through this I could see that I had become used to the technical production trained students and their form of professionalism. This situation gave me the confirmation that I could handle those newer or less experienced to a role than one might like with relative ease. I feel that this is a great skill to have for future production if there are people similar to them in the
