In the United States, an overwhelming 1 in every 6 women have been or will become victims of sexual assault. Crimes involving sexual assault in the United States has decreased dramatically over the last 20 years, but remains an issue throughout college campuses, prisons and even the military. Many of the offenders are often people who the victim knows, whether it be a friend, family member, date or acquaintance. Those who have gone through the terrifying nightmare have a tendency of becoming diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and depression. Many victims are unable to cope with what has happened to them and turn to drugs and alcohol to ease their pain.

Forensic Nursing: The Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner The Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) is a registered nurse who receives special training and certification through a SANE program to provide their expertise for those who have been victimized by a sexual assault crime. Those who are part of a SANE team work closely with law enforcement to obtain physical evidence from the alleged victim as well as the accuser. The organization provided registered nurses a specialty certification for Forensic Nursing. SANE programs are offered by IAFN as well as many colleges and universities nationwide. The criteria to become a SANE certified, according to IAFN, is that you must be working as a registered nurse for at least two years. IAFN offers two SANE programs, SANE-A (adult) and SANE-P (pediatric). Both programs require you have 40 hours of classroom learning and 40 clinical hours in the field. Once you have fulfilled the education requirements you are eligible to sit for the certification. The SANE program prepares you to serve not only as a nurse but as an investigator as
