I attended a training entitled Medical/Forensic Aspects of Sexual Assault. It was presented by Shalotta Sharp and Gypsi Ward. In this training we learned how to identify the responsibility of the SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) identify the role of the multi-disciplinary approach to sexual assault, as well as identify patient populations affected by sexual violence.
The first slide show discussed was entitled Law Enforcement Training. We discussed the culture of rape, the different types of offenders, and paraphilia’s, profiling, male on male attacks, and genital injuries. A statistic that stood out to me was that one rape occurs every 2 minutes, which means there are about 21,600 rapes per month, and 259,200 per year. It was interesting to hear about the process individuals in law enforcement had to go through when dealing with rape victims and suspects. I learned how they are supposed to initially respond to suspects. Law enforcement should find out suspect’s identity or description and location, remove suspect from crime scene if suspect is present, confirm identity, isolate suspect to prevent communication with others. Initially, when I heard that I was in disbelief. But after seeing photos that illustrated how fast genital areas heal I was amazed. We briefly reviewed Rape Trauma Syndrome (RTS.)
