Interventions for Sexual Issues and Dysfunctions The case study consists of the Wilsons, married couples that report having limited sexual activity, although still attractive to each other. Lately Mrs. Wilson has been remembering horrific details of her past when she was sexually abused. She imagines the abuse more these days since her daughter is around the same age of when she was abused. Mrs. Wilsons past has created a gap in her sexual relationship with her husband, along with being diagnosed with vaginismus. During couples counseling, the Wilsons will be working on behavioral techniques to diminish Mrs. Wilson’s vaginismus in order regain the couple’s sex life. This paper will discuss how to use behavioral techniques along with the challenges counselors can face when implementing interventions with couples.
One Sexual Therapy Intervention Mrs. Wilson’s previous sexual abuse seems to be the key to the relationships sexual issues. Positive outcomes of interventions for sexual issues have become less predictable and success rates are lower (Rosen & Leiblum, 1995). It is critical for the counselor to help Mrs. Wilson move past her abuse and enjoy her sex life with her husband. There are several factors that can determine if the intervention being implemented will lead to positive outcomes, such as age, health status, and population (Rosen & Leiblum, 1995).
