‘The Arrival’ by Shaun Tan, is recreated by ‘Spare Papers Puppet Theatre’ evoking an immigrant’s experience through a foreign environment.
Throughout the performance, no direct dialogue was used to display a language barrier between the citizens and the man, instead expressed by hand gestures and facial expressions to demonstrate mood, emotions, and thoughts. For example, when the man approached the foreign environment he bent lower, cautiously peeking from under the brim of his hat and tightening his hold on his possessions. He develops an imminent relationship with his ‘rent owner’ even revealing she too was an immigrant and recounts her horrific experience.
