The type of environment can really change a man's ways and the way he lives and acts. For instance, imagine how different the people on the other side of the world live, and how different their cultures and identities are compared to ours. Just like in Shawshank Redemption, Andy's personality completely changes after many years being stuck behind walls and separate from the rest of society. I have experienced how an environment can shape an identity when I lived across the world for 2 years. It was not as extreme of a change as Andy experienced but it still happened to shape my identity differently than here in Canada. He was also like this outside of prison too, before he had committed that crime. Once andy spent a year or two in prison his personality started to change and so did his identity. He became tougher, stronger, and more independent because that was the way you had to be to survive a day to day life in prison. On the outside, you could be whoever you wanted to be, and act how ever you want to, but once you spend a majority of your life behind those brick walls, you start to change as a person, just like Andy did. You only listen to the rules the prison gives you. You aren't allowed any freedom of speech, and neither freedom to do anything practically. I had changed as a person because a majority of my childhood was spent living in a totally different culture compared to my birthplace. I started adapting to the accent, and started speaking the native language there as well. I had almost felt like I was born there, even though I was actually a Canadian citizen. Even when I told my school mates that I was born in Canada and had lived there 7 years prior to coming here, they were shocked because I blended in so well as a kiwi. After the two and a half years had passed, me and my family had finally moved back home to Calgary, and yet it still felt awkward to be there even though it was home, almost as how Brooks felt when he left the prison gates and entered the real world. I can relate the change in societies and how it can change your identity and how you act and such because of that.

In the short story skin, it talks about how Drioli was now poor and homeless, but before he had been very wealthy. This drastic change in wealth could change a man's identity because they are so used to being able to afford everything and not have to worry constantly about what you will be able to eat next, or where you will sleep that night.
