Essay Question: Sheer luck was the only reason William was triumphant at the Battle of Hastings
William was victorious in the battle of Hastings because of everything but luck. One way William won the battle of Hastings was because the Pope gave his blessing to William and his men. Another way William won the battle of Hastings was because he had professionals in his army. The last way William won the battle of Hastings was by being ready with battle plans, strategies and tactics. Some may see that only by luck that William won; that luck made the Saxons come down the hill, that luck killed Harold but without archers and cavalry William would never have won. William was victorious in the battle of Hastings not because of luck, but because of him having the Pope on his side, a professional army and was ready with battle plans. One way William won the battle of Hastings was because he had the Pope’s blessing. With the Pope’s blessing William’s men, know they are doing something good for God so they would fight harder. William had planned to take out the shield wall and a plan to kill Harold. William had tactics to help keep his men alive while killing Saxons. He had strategies that helped him get the upper hand while reversing the Saxon’s strategies. While having a great plan to destroy the Saxons main strength the shield wall. Without a plan Williams, men would run around aimlessly at the shield wall while the Saxons took them down. Having these plans helped greatly in winning the battle. “According to historians, a risky strategy of Williams that finally won him the battle” (History Alive 8 pg. 75) without this risky strategy William would never have succeeded.
