Research Paper on Shel Silverstein Shel Silverstein was a very poetic and artistic symbol at his time and in many years past. Even as a kid Shel Silverstein was a person of art. Born in Chicago, Illinois he had a loving father and mother named Nathan and Helen Silverstein. When he was only 12 when he started to draw and graduated from Roosevelt High School when he was 18. “Following his artistic aspirations, he went to study at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts (presently known as Art Institute of Chicago) then later to Roosevelt University.” (Sheldon Allan Silverstein Childhood, Life & Timeline). However, in 1953, he dropped out of them to serve in the army in Korea and Japan. While in these places, he drew cartoons for the Stars and Stripes magazine. During his adulthood Shel Silverstein was lonely. He did have a wife named Susan Hastings that had a child. Her name was Shoshanna, born on June 30, 1970. Five years later though, Susan Hastings died. Then only 6 years after that Shosanna died at the age of 11 of cerebral aneurysm. After that he never married again, although he had an affair with a woman named Sarah Spencer who made his son, Mathew. Shel Silverstein died May 10, 1999 because of a heart attack. He is very talented in drawing, writing stories, writing poems, writing songs, theatre, and cartoon. Shel Silverstein stands out from other poets because he speaks more directly to children. With his works of The Giving Tree and Falling Up, being some of his most popular, he won the hearts of children all across America and other countries. He also spoke to adults in his works in Stars and Stripes magazine when he worked in the military. Then he did cartoons for Playboy magazines. Playboy, being very popular at that time, made him very outstanding for
