Using the Sheppard Video to Develop Understanding For me, I see Ellen as a public spokesperson for the LGBTQ community. Her “coming out” gave so much hope to many others to do the same. In my opinion, Ellen has brought a large amount of awareness to America via her television presence. I was not aware of Judy or Matthew Sheppard prior to this discussion post. I feel that that Judy Sheppard has used an awful loss and created something positive of it by teaching others how someone who is LGBTQ can lose their life over their sexual identity. Per Dinkins & Englert (2015), using LGBTQ in texts in middle school classroom’s can be beneficial to students in understanding different identities from their own. In my opinion, using a YouTube video may be equally helpful to students and parents to aid them in understanding how discrimination can affect the LGBTQ community.

Thus, a counselor needs to practice active listening and unconditional positive regard (Hays and Erford, 2014). Furthermore, depression and risk of suicide is higher within the LGBQT population due to the associated negativity towards those who are different (Hays and Erford, 2014). Thus, counselors should be trained to recognize both depression and suicide, such as we are in this counseling program. Equally important, a counselor must be able to recognize their inner biases and attitudes (Hays and Erford, 2014). Finally, my personal ideas of how to incorporate sensitivity into a counseling programs is discussion posts like this, videos, and assignments like the cultural immersion project. I feel it would be beneficial to interact face to face with LGBQT clients, which I assume we may have that opportunity during practicum, perhaps. Even attending a parade or events in our community can raise our own levels of
