Everything seemed eerily quiet now that everyone had left. The sheriff said not to disturb the area. Gardening was out. Casey decided to go inside and call Ray. He did want details. He answered his cell phone on the third ring.
“Hi, sweetheart, have they come yet?”
“Yes. They’ve come and gone.”
“What’s the verdict?”
“The bones are old, really old, like a century ago old. You don’t need to worry about me. I’m not in any danger.”
“I’m relieved. You gave me quite a scare. Who all came?”
“The sheriff, medical examiner, and a handful of crime scene investigators who took samples and examined every rock around the area. They took the bones to the medical examiner’s laboratory in Madison. Sheriff Hunter said he would contact me when he had any information.”

Ray paused. “I need to get back to the courtroom. I’ll talk to you tonight. Love you.”
“Bye.” Realizing she held her breath, she exhaled. Now, what? She could log in and check for new work orders. That would occupy her time for a little while. She walked into the house and headed straight for the study to log in. Three work orders popped into her queue. These would take up the rest of the afternoon. At least she had work to keep her mind off of the day’s disaster.
The day passed quickly. Work had provided a necessary distraction. The sun had vanished long ago. Casey logged off. Her stomach growled. She found herself in the kitchen searching through the refrigerator and pantry for dinner. Not feeling up to cooking or washing pots and pans, she opted for a bowl of cereal.
