Sherlock Jr Continuity

All films and music videos that we watch, whether it be at home or at a movie theatre, are edited in their own unique way. As we watched the short film Sherlock Jr., and the music video Treat You Better, we were able to pinpoint a few aspects of editing. In both the short film and music video, we were able to identify graphic and temporal relations and the continuity and discontinuity within those two specific relations. In Sherlock Jr. we see several examples of graphic and temporal continuity and discontinuity. For example, towards the end of the film when Sherlock Jr. is on the motorcycle by himself, he rides through several different locations ranging from a street to a forest, even a desert in such a smooth way that it is appropriate to classify that scene as graphic continuity. The scene changes that take place after Sherlock Jr. steps into the film being displayed at the theatre are sudden, but are connected very smoothly by a “cut” that made the transition process straightforward and easy to track allowing viewers to interpret it as a graphic continuity. This exact scene is also an example of temporal discontinuity because some of those scene changes go from night time to day time which lead viewers to feel uneasy, or uncertain about the time in the given day. The music video Treat You Better by Shawn Mendes, portrays models similar but also different to those of Sherlock Jr. For the most part, the scenes are constantly shifting all over the place that it makes it very difficult to focus on a certain aspect.
