“I refused to fail. I was smart. I was arrogant. I was lucky.” This quote goes to show how Sherman Alexie felt about learning and reading. Alexie loved learning, but what he loved most was reading. Sherman Alexie was a young Indian boy living on a reservation, where Indians were expected to be stupid and have very little knowledge. Although, Alexie didn’t fall under these standards, Alexie was a very smart Indian boy who wanted to always become better and smarter. The quote goes to show that Sherman Alexie was determined, he had goals, and he had a drive to be smarter than most Indians. Throughout the text, Alexie is telling how much he loves to read, and how he learns to read. Alexie tells us how he wants to change the reservation and how he wishes, all kids had the opportunity to read or how he wishes all kids wanted to read. Alexie had things that many people during his time didn’t have and these were books. Alexie’s dad also had a love for books, so all of his dad's books were passed down to him and it was easy for him to learn and read.
