In Depth Analysis of Sherman Alexie's, Indian Education
Every short story has their own way to hook the reader’s attention. However, how exactly does the author make this happen? In Indian Education, the story follows Victor from first grade through high school and his experiences he has throughout his school year being a Native American and is fast-paced which contains only the most potent moments from Victor’s youth, which shows where he gets his "education". The structure of the plot is well written and the incidents and ideas that occur in the story are derived out properly which delivers the message of the author. “In the short story, Indian Education, Sherman Alexie tackles this issue by examining examples of justice and injustice over twelve years in a boy’s life. In the story, Victor first comes face to face with injustice” (Individual Justice 1). Sherman Alexie’s message about injustice builds up throughout the story of Indian Education. The author shows how injustices gradually occur on victor throughout his school years. “But his understanding of injustice becomes much more complex in grades two through twelve as he experiences discrimination against his American Indian identity” (Individual Justice 1). Discrimination is critical because it shows how racism still exists for minorities and how it influences them in their lives. Victor is being victimized in his school life while his classmates treat him unfairly because he attends an all-white school. “Victor merely tries to survive the injustices fired at him, and on other occasions, he fights back. While fighting, he makes us conscious of the immense challenge of reaching the ideal of “justice for all”” (Individual Justice 3). This also shows how Victor will not let himself be discriminated against while standing up for himself because he realizes no one will. Many people, after being discriminated against have had to fight back and stand up for himself. In the story, injustice helps victor become his own individual and encourages him know that he can defend himself from racism. These incidents indicate how people think ignorantly and negatively towards him because of this which conveniently fits in the
