Shirley Chisholm was born on November 30, 1924 in Brooklyn, New York. She is best known for becoming the first African-American Congresswoman. Shirley Chisholm graduated from Brooklyn College in 1946. She started her career as a teacher then she went on to earn a master’s degree from Columbia University. She was also the director of the Hamilton-Madison Child Care Center and an educational consultant of New York City’s Bureau of Child Welfare from 1953 to 1964. In 1964, Shirley Chisholm was elected for the New York State Assembly. This was during the time of the Civil Rights Movement. During her time in the assembly she sponsored fifty bills. Only eight of the bills out of all fifty of the bills were passed. One of the bills she sponsored provided help for students in poverty to go on to higher education. Another bill provided employment insurance for domestic and personal employees. Another bill repelled a law that caused female teachers in New York to lose their position while on a maternity leave. In 1968, Shirley Chisholm ran for U.S. Congress. Her antagonist (opponent) was a Civil Rights Leader named James Farmer. She won the election and began her career as a Congresswomen. She continued to be involved in politics by cofounding the National Political Congress for Black Women in 1984. In 1984 and 1988 she campaigned for Jesse Jackson in Presidential election. In 1991 Shirley Chisholm retired from politics then in 1993 she was inducted (added) to the National Women’s Hall of Fame. Shirley Chisholm died on January 1, 2005 in Ormond Beach near Daytona Beach after suffering several strokes. She was buried in the Oakwood Mausoleum at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Buffalo, New
