Two kinds Two kinds is a short story written by Amy tan. It is about a Chinese family that moved from China to America. In the story Amy described the relationship between Ni Kan, a young girl, and her immigrant mother. Moving to America her mother lost everything including her family, however the one thing that she didn’t lost was the hope that her daughter will have it all and be famous one day. It was sad how the mother pressured her daughter to be a genius and would not accept her daughter as she is. I think the reason why the mother felt like she needed to change her daughter is because after she lost everything, she wanted to feel good about herself by being the mother of a genius kid. In the beginning of the story, Ni Kan looked like she has a low self-esteem since she felt like she was continuously disappointing her mother. However, after a fight with her mother, she has changed. She saw her reflection in the mirror and decided she won’t let her mother change her. It’s great that a young age girl could think like this and have the ability to stand up for herself. In exchange for these lessons the mother had to clean the teacher’s apartment. However, she did not practice during the lessons, therefore she did not do well during the talent show. Her mother was humiliated but she did not lost hope in her daughter, and she wanted her to keep on practicing, however, her daughter refused. Her mother told her that there is two kind of children, the one who obey and the other kind who do what they want to do, and this is why the name of the story is two kinds. Ni Kan responded was hurtful, she wished that she was died like her unborn sisters.
