The poem “Losings” written by Suzanne Jay, portrays the situation of a parent and a child taking anything and everything they can from their burning home. Oftentimes in life, people face many kinds of situations and phases. Some of them are positive that bring us joy and comfort, while others are challenging, and even difficult to accept; but this is all part of life. In the first line of the poem, I noticed that the narrator said that “the rescues were random” this implies that it is a situation where the characters, the narrator and her child, were unaware and unprepared for the crisis that is currently occurring. Due to the fact that the situation sprung forth all of a sudden, all the narrator could do was to “snatch whatever happens to be lying close” without even thinking of its importance and value. In addition, the narrator says this because it is not possible to prioritize the value of each possession. As a result, we can infer that she could only carry a small amount of their possession due to the fact that she also has to escape with her child safely. Moreover, keep in mind that the majority of their things were burned to ashes, this would mean that they had a hard time obtaining new items. However, at the end of the story she later says “of course, as time passes other things fill some of the empty places…” which suggests that they have moved on and time has helped them fill the void in their heart. They relied on time to heal and get used to the new life they now have. I found the last line of the poem very interesting because it shows how the narrator values the memories she has with her past, this shows how there will always be a space for the old memories
