IRWP Essay Essential Question: Should All Members Of Society Play A Role In Government?

Throughout history, there have been many types of governments in which people have and haven’t been a part of. The people are the members of the society, and they have been divided into groups on the basis of their wealth, education, social status and marriage etc. Of all the types of government Democracy is the best form and people also get their own rights in a democracy. All the members of society should have a role in government because they are the ones to be governed.
Democracy is a form of government in which people have a say in government, they vote for the representative that they think is the best to govern and protect them. In the Funeral Oration of Pericles it is stated: “It is true that we are called a democracy, for government is in the hands of many and not in the few”. This states that democracies support the role of people in government. In contrary to that, absolute government or an absolute monarchy was a type of government in which people had no say in government. They were ruled by a centralized power or an absolute ruler. For example King James I claimed divine right (power to rule comes from God). As he stated: “For Kings are not only God’s lieutenants upon earth, but even by God himself they are called gods”. This statement clearly states that like the way God rules and no one has a say in his doing the same way people don’t have the right to interfere with the king’s way of ruling or his/her actions.
Democracy is the best form of government because people have the power and people have their own rights which shouldn’t be taken away. John Locke stated: “Men are by nature all free, equal and independent. No one can be put under the power of another without his own consent”. This statement clearly states that people can’t be governed without their own consent. People should play a role in government because they are the ones to be governed. In a democracy all members of a society can and should play a role in government, even if the only role they play is to vote. Those who choose not to vote have given up their role in government, and are not doing their part to make democracy work.
Most people would disagree that a democracy is not the best form of government because a democracy can not work properly when the people are not competent or informed enough. Because a democracy gives the people power, people must be informed on political news and understand political concepts but a lot of people do not or they do not care. As Stalin Says:” It is enough that the people know there was an election. The people who cast the votes decide nothing. The people who count the votes decide everything.” This quote states that there is still no thinking in the voting that people do. They opponents would say that people are there to serve their country as they did so in Sparta. Kids were sent in the military in their young ages.
Democracies help people have a say in government as Locke
