Although I’ve only been in college for roughly 2 months, I’ve already been the crazy girl who stays up all night to finish studying with the help of an enormous amount of caffeine. There is an infinite amount of reasons why people consume caffeine, but is there a specific reason why so many college students feel the need to constantly have caffeine in our systems? Obviously, most college students use caffeine to stay awake or increase their mood. However, caffeine use is a social trend, and a lot college students use caffeine because it’s seen as hip or cool. To start off, it’s a stimulant so it keeps you very alert in times when you would naturally feel tired or sluggish. The jolt given to your nervous system can suppress fatigue and improve ones’ mood. This occurs because the caffeine increases your heart rate and as that increases, the body circulates more blood and could potentially speed up your metabolism (Olsen, 2014). Additionally, when caffeine is consumed in moderation there are actually quite a few health benefits. David Elmenhorst, lead author of the study and researcher for the Institute of Neuroscience and Medicine explains that “there is substantial evidence that is protective against neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s disease” caffeine can also decrease the risk of heart disease, and greatly improve people mood (qtd. In Olsen, 2014). Caffeine not only keeps you awake and feeling a little less grouchy through the longest of nights, it also has an abundance of legitimate health
