Should College Athletes be Paid? One of the most debated topics in sports, if college athletes should be paid, has been something that’s been brought up time after time ever since Ed O’Bannon’s lawsuit against the NCAA in 2013. There has been constant debate on how much these athletes should be paid, or if they should be paid at all. Many people believe that they are already being paid by receiving free education. Others believe there should be compensation for consistently putting their bodies on the line, or even just for how much money NCAA and the schools make with their effort and performances. Reasons why many people believe student athletes should be paid include them being the one doing the hard work. On average, student athletes spend over 40 hours training for their sports. Many college athletes don't come from privileged backgrounds where their parents can send them money whenever they want or need it, and dont have the time to have an after school job as most of their time is spent on their sports. They argue that It's true that the athletes are sacrificing their bodies and putting in a lot of work, but they are also being paid already in the form of a free education and a chance to experience higher quality of sporting competitions for free. They argue that if they were to get paid they wouldn’t be student athlete anymore, they would be school employees. They say It would be difficult to decide the pay and who all would get a salary and that the players would always demand more money if they are paid. Those are some of the reasons many people believe that athletes shouldn’t be paid and should just enjoy his/her time at the school and appreciate the opportunity of playing a high level college sport and receiving an education while remaining free of any kind of student
