Many Schools and colleges use speech codes to prevent verbal abuse of students. In order for students to feel comfortable and free from abuse, speech codes are used to stop harassment, fighting, and other forms of physical, mental, or verbal abuse. Speech codes also provide a better understanding of diversity among students attending colleges and universities. Many might argue that speech codes violate the right to free speech and shouldn't be used in colleges and universities. But speech codes correlate with the right to free speech and only restricts foul language and other forms of abuse. Speech codes focus mainly on preventing hatred between students and are enforced on the basis of the content that is used by individuals. Many individuals argue that speech codes violate the right to free speech whereas it only tries to prevent various forms of harassment. Speech codes enforce political correctness through restricting conduct or speech that results in offensive language and intimidating behavior. According to Barbara Ehrenreich in the article "Teaching Diversity with a Smile", she says that " Minorities by any other name, such as "people of color", will still bear a hugely disproportionate burden of poverty and discrimination." What Ehrenreich is trying to point out is that individuals should try to stop social injustices against people labeled as minorities and prevent discrimination from occurring. In many universities and colleges, students often get harassed or abused due to their nationality ethnicity, or color. This is why speech codes can be useful to prevent such discrimination and to provide a politically correct environment that promotes respect between
