Should High School Start Later

The Domino Effect A later start to the school day always seems like a brilliant idea. Students will get an extra hour of sleep and won’t have to worry about waking up at 6 or 7 in the morning. However, what if this trend was constant? What if every day was a late start? This trend would have many positive effects, however; negative effects would follow. This trend would create a domino effect. So should high schools start an hour later? No, because it would have disastrous effects! High schools should not start an hour later because everything would be taken out of sync. Most students are not getting the amount of sleep they need, so school should start an hour later. According to The Huffington Post, “Most medical professionals recommend between 8.5 and 9.25 hours of sleep for students” (Elliot). The current trend …show more content…
“Elementary schools start as late as 9:15 or 9:30, forcing working parents to send their young children to before-school care as well as after-care. Families whose children are in multiple school levels often have start and end times that span two hours in the morning and another two in the afternoon. The cost is being born by students and their families” (Start School Later). This would affect working parents especially the parents with younger children. Parents and young children would be forced to pay the price that they don’t deserve. Another reason high school start times shouldn’t be pushed back is because of sports. Emily Richmond uses good clues “Indeed, there’s always a vocal chorus warning that later start times will hurt high school sports” (Richmond). Studying habits won’t be the only thing negatively affected because of this. Practice for sports would continue later than unusual and many students wouldn’t get home until dark. Also, don’t forget that these students also have to study and do homework. It’s nothing but a negative domino
