Huck Finn – Should It Be on the No-No List? Honor, the ability to stand up for what is right and respecting others in doing so, is the most important asset in a person’s life. Especially in today’s climate, where bullying is sadly so prevalent, those with honor cannot only help someone else, but stand up for what is right. Those who possess true honor are far more superior to the average man. The beauty of this book is that Huck, a kid, and Jim, a slave, possess this trait, despite the odds. Honor is gained by experience, not necessarily age. Huck and Jim show what true honor is as they travel together down the Mississippi River. Some may think this book should be banned in classrooms because of the controversy it causes. After all, there is an ongoing tension between race in America. Very few people can understand what slaves went truly went through. Jim was a slave, but he escaped. Huck faced a similar challenge, for so long he was abused by his father Pap, a drunk, who as an adult showed no honor. Pap never loved Huck, and when he came home one night drunk, he almost killed Huck. The only reason Huck did not die was because Pap fell asleep, and Huck made sure the gun Pap had didn’t shoot him. At that point, Huck knew he had enough and took off, and began his journey down the Mississippi River. During the early part of his journey, Huck came across Jackson’s Island and encountered Jim. Instead of taking off, Huck let Jim come with him on his raft. Jim seemed to show great practical wisdom. He seemed to trust Huck, since he had no one else to trust. This journey gave Jim an opportunity to be free, not only in a legal sense, but in a moral sense. Jim felt, for the first time, that he was not hated by a white person.
