Good afternoon opponents, judges and audience. Today we are debating the resolution BIRT the Canadian Monarchy should be eliminated. We, the affirmative team strongly believe this resolution should stand. We believe this for many reasons. There is a lack of support for the monarchy, it costs a lot to maintain it, and the diversity of Canadians is under represented. First of all Canadians show a lack of support for the monarchy. According to a study by Your Canada, 55% of Canadians want to change to a Canadian Head Of State. In Quebec, this number is much higher with 79% wanting a change. Across Canada, support among people under 34 is highest (60%), but there is still a clear majority (55%) from people between the ages of 35 and 64. According …show more content…
Over the past ten years, the cost of the monarchy for Canadians has doubled. We Canadians pay $1.53 per capita each year to pay for the monarchy. However, the British only pay $1.32 per capita. While $1.53 may not seem like much, it cost Canada about $50 million each year. Why should Canadians pay more for the British Monarchy then the British. Canadians have to pay for the Queen, her representative the Governor General, and the lieutenant governors of the provinces. The different roles create an overlap which results in obsolete positions and results in money wasted. For example, the B.C costs lots of money to maintain a 102 room official residence for its lieutenant governor. According to Statistics Canada, in 2011, Canada had a foreign-born population of about 20% and reported and more than 200 ethnic origins. It is unbelievable that more than 200 ethnic origins would be represented by the Queen. How can the Queen represent the diversity of all Canadians. Saying she represents all Canadians would be unfair to those who aren't British, those who are native Americans, asians, French Canadians and many more. According to the Toronto Star, a lawyer is fighting to become a Canadian Citizen. He has fulfilled all the requirements, but refuses to pledge allegiance to the Queen. According to him, the Queen represents of inequality and racism, referring to England's colonial past. He says that he cannot take an oath to a symbol of racism. The queen is representative of the exploitation and colonialism of the aboriginal people when english pioneers came and abolished the aboriginal traditions and way of life. These same people, the ones who murdered so many native Americans, are celebrated in history as the heros of the new world even though they committed a cultural
