At age 13, Abby Moore was playing shortstop when a sharp grounder took a hop off a rock and she took the ball off her facemask. Her mask and glasses came off her face, but she wasn’t injured, she came up laughing. If it wasn’t for her facemask she would have had to go to the hospital. Softball players should be required to wear facemasks when playing for many reasons, many injuries have been reported about face injuries, the injuries that are caused can cost a lot, and the girls would no longer be able to use the excuse “Oh it will never happen to me, I don’t need to wear one.
One reason for requiring facemasks is the “Oh it will never happen to me” excuse would be eliminated completely. Take the case of eleven year old Kim. Eleven year old Kim, of Texas, was hit in the face by a line drive. Her mother said “Luckily the ball also grazed the bill of her hat or else her entire eye socket would have been shattered. However, the bone which supports the eye was fractured requiring Kim to have surgery to get it repaired.” Now every time Kim pitches she wears a face mask to keep her safe. (gameface.com) Kim’s injury would have been preventable because if her hat stopped the bone that could have shattered, then a facemask could have prevented the injury completely.
