Ever since the Olympic Games in Ancient Greece, it is no secret that, in basically every sport, athletes have been illegally using performance enhancing drugs, such as steroids, to get an unfair advantage on their competition. Even the most talented athletes, including Alex Rodriguez from the New York Yankees, former WWE wrestler, Chris Benoit, and even cyclist Lance Armstrong have formerly been caught using anabolic steroids to increase their performance. Many believe that it should be the athlete’s decision whether to use the drugs or not, but others believe the drugs should not be tolerated. The steroids and other performance enhancing drugs athletes are using have serious short and long term side effects. There are multiple ways an athlete can use steroids. Different types require different procedures to effectively use them. Most abusers of the drugs either take them orally or inject them into their muscles. Others are applied directly to the skin as a cream, gel, or patch. The doses abusers take can be anywhere from 10 to 100 times higher than the doses doctors prescribe to treat medical conditions. Using the drugs that extremely causes both minor and major side effects. Some minor side effects include severe acne, oily skin and hair, and premature hair loss. The abuser might find that their mood is negatively altered, causing them to be easily irritated and more aggressive than normal. They also might have depression and/or suicidal thoughts while using the drug. Some more concerning and serious side effects are liver, kidney, and heart disease. These diseases can cause the user to experience
