I am mother to a 16 month old baby girl. Seeing as how I watch mostly toddler things these days on TV I recently viewed Shrek with her this weekend. Shrek was released in 2001 by DreamWorks Pictures (1). Andrew Adamson and Vicky Jenson directed the computer-animated comedy that features the characters of Shrek played by Mike Myers, Princess Fiona by Cameron Diaz, and Donkey as Eddie Murphy. Originally based on book, this movie was created as sort of a parody to some of the most popular children’s stories. The story is about an ogre named Shrek who goes on a quest with his friend Donkey, to rescue Princess Fiona for her hopeful prince Lord Farquad, in order to get his swamp back. Before the fight scene begins Robin Hood does an ensemble where he sings a song for Fiona and he has a man off to the corner playing the accordion. This is clearly diegetic music because all of the characters in the film hear the song Robin Hood is singing. Fiona knocks Robin Hood out and then his men begin to attack her. The accordion goes from a fun loving tone to a more upbeat, intense sound as Fiona begins fighting off the men. She eventually even punches the accordion player last and then the music stops and Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey continue on their journey. I have to admit I’ve seen this movie for what seems like a thousand times, mostly because my daughter really enjoys it. It’s colorful, funny, has great music, and really grabs her attention. I find that it’s much easier to watch movies such as this, than to sit through an entire episode of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. I personally feel that Harry Gregson-Williams and John Powell did an awesome job on this film score, which is probably why it won an Academy
