Everyone has experienced a good speech and a bad speech in their life. Every good or effective speech draws upon rhetorical strategies to some extent. In Shrek the Third, Prince Charming delivers a speech that uses the rhetorical triangle, SOAPS, and the appeals to logos, ethos, and pathos. When Prince Charming first walks into the pub, he isn’t respected by the villains inside. However, he establishes a connection to them by saying, “We are more alike than you think”. This is his attempt to fortify the line in the rhetorical triangle between him, the speaker, to the villains, the audience. In his speech, he appeals to ethos by establishing that they all have a common goal, to fight back against their unfair fairytale endings. By stating that they have a common interest, it gives the villains a reason to listen to Prince Charming rather than just beating him up. Additionally, throughout his entire speech, Prince charming appeals to pathos. His whole speech is centered around making the villains feel as if they’ve been wronged. He uses emotionally-charged statements like, “Once upon a time, someone decided that we were the losers. But there are two sides to every story. And our side has not been told”. The purpose of the speech is to rile up the villains and using emotions does that perfectly. The villains anger drive them to follow Prince Charming in his scheme. However, there is little use of logos in his speech. His argument contains a claim that the villains’ lives are unfair and follows up with examples to prove it, but besides that, there is little implement of logistic arguments. This is probably the reason why Prince Charming’s band of villains breaks up in the end. His argument was very emotionally driven. When the emotions wore off, there wasn’t any logos to keep the argument
