Si ster tongue by Lisa Kanae explores language in Hawaii and its relationship to cultural Hegemony. Kanae overlays dialogue from her adolescent self who speaks Hawaii pidgin English, pieces of academic writings, and her written literature as an Academic. The story from her past dialogue follows her interaction with, and the development of her brother. Her brother Harold is a “Late Talker” and attends a school for special needs students. Kanae’s final dialogue with her brother in the story reveal her brother Harold completely grew out of his speech impediment. The book draws parallels to how Harold was perceived as a child, and how HPE speakers are perceived by the upper echelons of society.
