Siegfried Sassoon (1886-1967) was one of the first of these warrior poets. He was born into a wealthy family, who had made their fortune in India, and, as a result, he had a substantial private income. Despite his name, he had no German background; his mother was a fan of Wagner’s operas. He attended Cambridge University without taking a degree, and had begun to write at an early age. He was very patriotic, and abandoned his pursuit of cricket the British Army when the state of war was recognized in August of 1914 (Kendall, 106). Through his poems, Sassoon sought to make the reader aware of the horrible conditions of the war, specifically, the life in the trenches and, prophetically, the psychological impact war had on some of the troops.
