Significance Of Green Light In The Great Gatsby

What seems like just a regular dock light to most in the East Egg happens to mean so much more to a particular man across the bay in West Egg. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a book about a man who has a pool of mystery behind him. Throughout the entire book the man by the name of Gatsby put all of his effort into getting the woman of his dreams Daisy. No one really knows Gatsby besides his closest friend Nick they just attend his beautiful and big parties held at his mansion. Gatsby throws these parties in hopes to catch the eye of Daisy who is all about wealth however Daisy happens to have a husband whom she married while Gatsby was away in war. Gatsby's plan works against him in the end when we realize Daisys a reckless and careless woman. In this book a green light is what represents Daisy to Gatsby and there are three occurrences where it shows up meaning different things.

The first mention of this light was the very end of chapter one when Nick first started to see Gatsby behind the wealth. “I could have sworn he was trembling, involuntarily I glanced seaward-and distinguished nothing, except a single green light, minute and far away, that might have been the end of a dock” The green light here is showing how deeply he cares for her

The light starts out as Gatsby's secret motive where all he needs is the light he wants to be close to it. It changed when he let it slip that he even notices it and he felt the light slip further from him. By the end of the book it was Nicks last bit of both Gatsby and Daisy when it goes out he stares and admires it almost like he could stare long enough and get them back.
