When talking about elder abuse you think about one of a few things, either physical or mental abuse, but there are at least five different kinds of abuse and a few that are over extreme. A couple are the ones I listed above, physical and mental abuse. They are exactly how they sound. They would even get financially, sexually and emotionally abused while they were staying at a “safe haven.” As Dong explains as he was reviewing the nursing home he was at, 9.1% of the elders in that nursing home was being verbally abused, 5.2% were being physically abused, 0.6% were being sexually abused and much more were being done to them by the people that were supposed to taking care of them and giving them love like no one else was. Emotional abuse is basically the most used because no one can get caught because of lack of evidence. Some examples of this abuse is telling that they need to die or talking harsh to them so they are sad or they try to commit suicide because of the harsh language and talk. Examples of the aftermath of emotional abuse would be agitation, rocking or biting their lip, and/or lack of communication to the workers or other residents or family members. Those were just common abuse techniques that are more reported to somewhere other than the nursing home itself. You want them to be nice, caring and helpful to the needy elders. But most of the employees are mean and abusive to them because they are weaker than they are and easy targets to hurt. It makes the employees look mean and make them seem badder than they actually are. There were 150 studies that documented the reviews in the U.S, also in Canada, UK, Germany, Norway, and Sweden. (Harrington) Most of the good reviews were from RN’s, they have/had a better relationship with the residents than the uneducated employees because they took two to four years on how to correctly take care of the elder. (Harrington) RN’s should be the only people that should be able to work at any nursing home because there is possibility for less percentages of RN’s abusing the residents than an uneducated person that is just there for the paycheck. Some nursing homes are a mix of RN’s and just regular people that haven’t gone to college for health, and they probably have a less percentage of abuse cases. Having that mix would make a less chance of a turnover for the nursing home itself. The Nursing Home Reform Act of 1987 helped with the abuse a little bit but it still goes on it is just less than it used to be. (Harrington) Even the elders family members will help with the abuse in as many ways as the abusive employees would. There are
