Silence is an important theme in The Dream of Water. Throughout the novel, Mori gave readers a look at her struggles and challenges in her life. One of Mori’s struggles in The Dream of Water is dealing with her father. After her mother’s death, Mori’s father became strict, demanding, and mean. Although Mori’s father has always said things that hurt her, Mori could never talk to him the way she really wanted too. I believe this has to do with her Japanese culture. Mori was taught that she couldn’t talk back to people, especially people in her family. When Mori would speak her mind, I always felt she got punished. For example, when Mori would say or do the wrong thing her grandfather would put in her the dark room for hours to think about her
