On October 26, I attended the Silencing the Inner Critic workshop. This event focuses on helping attendees learn how self-compassion is bigger and powerful than what has been affecting them for many years. Many people went to this event and shared their experience, difficulties, and stress with others. We discussed what self-criticism is, how it influences our life negatively, what self-compassion is, and how to accept ourselves. Before attending the event, I thought it just gave me another “Chicken Soup for the Soul;” however, it does teach me how to overcome my inner critic by providing useful suggestions. I was moved and surprised by the term of “self-compassion” because I did not truly understand it. One of the key challenges that I am facing in the institution is to overcome self-condemnation after making mistakes. After hearing so many encouraging stories of other attendees, I gradually learned how to acknowledge my pain and suffering, how to increase my confidence and engage in positive self-talk, and how to defend my inner critic. Just like other students, I had many difficulties in managing problems around self-acceptance. These problems impaired with my interpersonal relationship and academic performance. Apart from resulting in low mood and anxiety, the problems affected my quality of life. The Silencing the Inner Critic helped the participants including me understand and accept the crescendos of self-acceptance. It educated me on the development of self-acceptance difficulties. Issues such as changing unhelpful thinking, accepting a relationship with others, and changing behavior that were addressed in the event were very helpful. It taught me to avoid problems that affect my self-acceptance, and as a result, improve my quality of life as a
