Similarities Between Antigone And Martin Luther King Jr

Since the beginning of time, thousands of people have seen something they don’t agree with and fought against it to achieve a common goal. The same can be said for both Antigone and Martin Luther King Jr. While both Antigone and Martin Luther King Jr. broke the law in order to achieve their own goals, I believe that Martin Luther King Junior’s method was more effective in the sense that he realized how bad the laws were and fought it head on to enhance the lives of African Americans in the United States of America compared to Antigone, who thought the law was bothersome and went around it for personal gain, rather than for the purpose of helping people like Martin Luther King Jr.

“Antigone” begins with a conversation between Antigone and her sister. The two siblings acknowledge that giving their brother a proper burial is against the wishes of the current king, Kreon, and will result in death. “but as for Polyneices miserable corpse the say the townsfolk have received a proclamation that none may shroud him in a tomb or wail for him.” (Sophocles 20). “The penalty prescribed for doing this is death from stoning by the city’s people.” (Sophocles 21). This line is big because it shows that Antigone, just like Martin Luther King, understood the consequences of doing what she did, however, Antigone will tackle things differently than Martin Luther King. Later in the play it is discovered that someone sprinkled dirt onto the body. This line is so meaningful because it shows the first difference between Antigone’s plan of going behind everyone’s back and Martin Luther King’s plan of tackling the problem head on, “All right, I’m telling you. The corpse-someone just know has buried it and gone; the sprinkled thirsty dust upon its skin and carried out the proper rites.” (Sophocles 30).
