Many challenges are avoidable in life, such as hard tasks, conflict, or toxic relationships, but one that is not avoidable is struggle. Struggle is the backbone of life, since no one would be where they are today without it. People who try to avoid struggle usually do not achieve what they aspire to be, since change requires struggle and discomfort. However, people who hit rock bottom and persevere through life's canyons can achieve anything they set their minds to. While struggle may seem hard in the present, the work that is put in to erase the struggle will pay off in the long run for the better good. No one can hit rock bottom if that is where they started. This was the case for Frederick Douglass, an American slave. He was born into slavery without either parent supporting him. He is known for the famous quote, “If there is no struggle, there is no progress.” Douglass’ life perfectly aligns with this quote since every time he was knocked down he persevered through the battle and won. An example of his perseverance is when he stood up to Covey and told him he would refuse to be whipped. “I resolved to fight; and, suiting my action to the resolution, I seized Covey hard by the throat; and as I did so I rose.” (Douglass? ). This quote shows Douglass has had enough and fought back against Covey. If he had not taken this risk, he may have never been free.
