On the surface, the novel Invisible Man and the movie Casablanca don’t seem to have anything in common. Invisible Man is about a young, black man struggling with identity in a white man’s world; while Casablanca is the reconnecting of two old lovers in the middle of WWII. However, the connection is uncanny. Both their protagonists hold grudges on their past, but soon realize there’s no need to. Rick, in Casablanca, begins the movie as a bitter, lonely, young man. He owns a saloon in which he stays in isolation. He has a rule for himself where he doesn’t drink with costumers, but this changes when his past lover, Ilsa, happens to walk into his saloon one night.
