Although America is supposed to be a land of equal opportunities, racial discrimination and neglect have made society nearly impossible for nearly everybody. George and Lennie worked on a ranch, but always wanted to follow their dreams of owning land themselves . They hoped and dreamed about having a farm and farm animals on the land that they wanted to own. The boss's son Curley hoped that his wife would stay loyal to him but she would always disobey him and his “ rules “. hopes and dreams give a purpose. Candy is broken when he finds curley's wife's body because it marks the end of his dreams. When this ability to hope and dream goes away, some level of the characters humanity goes with it. Lennie and George have a fairly simple dream: To own a small farm, and be their own bosses. "An' live off the fatta the lan'," Lennie shouted. "An' have rabbits. Go on, George! "I tell you I ain't used to livin' like this. I coulda made somethin' of myself." She said darkly, "Maybe I will yet."(page 52). Curley's wife has a dream that although different in detail from the other's dreams, is still very similar in its general desires. She dreams of being a movie star. "Come there when I was a kid. Well, a show come through, an' I met one of the actors. He says I could go with that show. But my ol' lady wouldn' let me. She says because I was on'y fifteen. But the guy says I coulda. If I'd went, I wouldn't be livin' like this, you bet." (page 53-54). Making it big in Hollywood may have been a fairly new American Dream. She wanted to be an actress in Hollywood. She imagines how great it would be to stay in nice hotels, own lots of beautiful clothes, and have people want to take her photograph. but her husband is the one stopping her from achieving her
