Fear is spread everywhere, friends are turning on friends, and the government is punishing the innocent; the basic definition of historic McCarthyism. Originally, this word stemmed from the mid-ninety’s, when the U.S government turned into an immense “witch-hunt”, as it was seen by accused writer, Arthur Miller. Arthur, former spouse of Merlyn Monroe, was the author of the well know play, the Crucible. This play was an outpouring of Miller’s view of the state in which the U.S government was in at that time. As well as his research and fascination with the Salem witch trials. Needless to say, there are many similarities between McCarthyism and Arthur Miller’s play; thence the three most prominent similarities have been chosen; trials, government, and fear. …show more content…
Likewise, in the Crucible, we see no separation between church and state, making a supposed act against God an act against the court. Though, the government types are different in each case, they are similar because in the days of senator McCarthy, prejudice had already formulated in the hearts of the people. This making the U.S citizens hatful and bias towards communism. Consequently, both of these cases had hate and bias towards a world-view, and because of this, these governments were made into a tool to weed these people out. Furthermore, the comparison between the court in the Crucible and the government in McCarthy’s days is similar. Similar, not just because prejudice had infiltrated both these governments, but because a certain hate for a particular “world view” was already in the hearts of the people themselves; whether that be witch craft or communism.
